How it goes
1. Open it up
On a re-side, the old siding comes off and the sheathing gets inspected — this is where hidden water damage turns up.
2. Barrier & flashing
Weather barrier lapped shingle-style, then head, sill and pan flashing at every opening.
3. Furring & install
Vertical furring gives the wall an air gap to dry into, then the siding goes on over it.
4. Trim & seal
Corners, fascia and penetrations trimmed and sealed — with the right joints left open to drain.

How long does cedar siding last up here?+
Decades, if the wall behind it can dry. Cedar handles this climate well; what kills a wall is trapped water from bad flashing, not the species of the board.
Can you side over the existing siding?+
It is sometimes possible, but it hides whatever is going on underneath. On a mountain house, opening the wall to check the sheathing is usually worth the extra day.
